In this lively and insightful presentation, Doug shares:
  • The Good — the joy of painting on location, the thrill of discovery, and the deep connection formed between artist and place.
  • The Bad — the unpredictable weather, shifting light, curious onlookers, and all the challenges that make plein air painting both humbling and exhilarating.
  • The Beauty — the magic of capturing a moment as it truly exists, infused with mood, memory, and the artist’s personal vision.
Doug’s stories span decades of travel, creativity, and artistic growth. Whether you’re a seasoned painter, a curious beginner, or simply someone who loves art, you’ll enjoy this engaging look at the plein air tradition through the eyes of an artist who has lived it fully.

Plein Air Painting with
Douglas Johnson

Passions for both art and aviation have burned in Doug Johnson's heart for decades. He grew up around aviation: first as an Air Force dependent, and later as a career USAF cancer physician, nuclear consultant, and flight surgeon. He has been a pilot for over 45 years and continues to fly the airplane he built almost 30 years ago.

Drawing and sketching since childhood, Doug started seriously painting in the studio and outdoors (plein air) during his college years, documenting memorable scenes, travels, and moments in history. Though largely self-taught, he has studied under Paul Ladnier, George Van Hook, Ken DeWaard, and Bill Farnsworth. Over the years, his loose impressionistic style has emerged, and numerous awards at regional and international shows have followed. His images have been published in several national magazines, and his artwork is represented in private collections throughout the United States, as well as in London and Paris.

Most recently, Doug published his memoir entitled “Portrait of a Kaleidoscope Life,” chosen by Amazon as the #1 New Release in the Aviation & Nautical Biography category in May 2025.
