LuAnn Dunkinson’s travel watercolors focus on quick, place‑specific observation, lightweight materials, and planning for unpredictable conditions — she teaches adapting your palette, working fast, and using travel sketches and photos as the foundation for finished pieces.

After earning my BFA from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, I relocated and raised my two children in New Jersey. Long story short- there was a year-long trip around the world after the kids left the nest, and then a job offers in Northeastern Florida that brought me to Jacksonville.

When asked why I love working in watercolor, my reply is that watercolor is like working a puzzle…another pastime I enjoy. When everything works out as it should, the results can be amazing. But there must be a bit of planning ahead of time to make that happen, along with the fortunate occasion when watercolor does what watercolor should do, whether planned or not.
​
I’m the past President of the Jacksonville Watercolor Society, after served several years on their Board. I am also an active member of the First Coast Plein Aire Painters, Florida Watercolor Society, Jacksonville Artist Guild, St Augustine Art Association, and the Jacksonville Urban Sketchers.

​I’ve been grateful to have won numerous awards for my watercolors, most notably The Cheap Joes Purchase Award at the Florida Watercolor Society’s 50Th Anniversary Show in 2021. Most recently, I was awarded the Bronze Award at the Jacksonville Watercolor Society’s Spring 2023 show in St Augustine. There have also been several awards in Plein Aire painting, including the First Place Blue Ribbons at the St Mary’s Plein Aire Competition in 2022 and 2023, with a second place in 2024.
I’m happy to be represented by The Butterfield Garage Gallery in St. Augustine. I live in Avondale with my husband, Andy.
