JAG Featured Member Artist
As a painter and printmaker, Helen Ashmead enjoys using different painting and print mediums to create her visions of the natural world in both realistic manners and symbolic ways to depict different states of perception emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Strong, pure colors are frequently used in her paintings and prints with the desire to evoke feelings of joy and light.
Her oil paintings, acrylic paintings, as well as watercolor, and pastels depict her favorite subjects of flowers and landscapes, animals, and birds. Helen uses etchings enhanced with watercolor, drypoint, and linoleum block prints to create images of angels, animals, and landscapes.
Helen’s education as a fine artist began with children’s art classes at the Cummer Museum, then high school classes with Memphis Wood. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Connecticut and completed graduate work in oil painting with Yale University’s Rudolf Zallinger at the Hartford Art School, and continues to learn with contemporary fine artists in painting and printmaking.
Her works have been exhibited along the east coast and are in private collections across the country and across the Atlantic Ocean. Helen has received awards for her paintings, relief prints, and etchings, but the rewards she values most are when collectors choose to have one of her paintings or prints for their own.
Helen continues to challenge herself by expanding her vision of her subjects, and in doing so finds that the style and medium used for each work follows its own path. Other interests include metaphysics, neuroscience and using the arts to enhance one’s health and life. She continues to pursue her love of art in her home studio along the St Johns River.
