JAG Featured Member Artist
My goal as an abstract artist is to create a provocative image that encourages viewers to look further. Layer by layer, I build up the painting then obscure or unearth parts of it. This back and forth creates a dialogue that determines the direction of the piece.
I use a variety of tools and techniques. Acrylic paints figure prominently, as well as paper which I find or embellish and use as collage elements. Stamping, scratching, adding found objects and creating three-dimensional areas are all fair game. Kitchenware shops, hardware stores and antique markets are some of my favorite hunting grounds for non-traditional tools and elements.
As I work on the painting, adding elements, I may be drawn to certain areas which I will then enhance; conversely I may cloud areas to create a sense of mystery. As I let the painting speak to me, I aim to develop a composition that will pique curiosity, inviting viewers to sit a bit and enjoy my imagery.
